Privacy Policy
PinQuiz ("we", "our") is developed by Andreas Landauer / andio.studio, Augustinergasse 17, 5020 Salzburg, Austria. PinQuiz was previously named Atlast and Triplore.
PinQuiz exists in two forms, which process different data:
- The mobile app — iOS and Android
- The web version — pinquiz.com
This policy covers both. Please read the part that applies to you.
Part A — The Mobile App
iOS & Android
A1. Data we collect
- Location data — with your permission, the app uses your device's GPS to find points of interest near you. Your location is used while the app is active and is not stored on our servers. If you decline location access, the app estimates your approximate location from your IP address so you can still explore.
- Anonymous account identifier — the app signs you in anonymously via Firebase Authentication. This creates a random identifier containing no name, email or personal details. It is used to save progress and enable features such as country statistics.
- Progress and quiz data — your answered questions, favorites, visited places and settings are stored locally on your device. In addition, some data is stored on our servers (Google Firebase / Firestore): generated quiz questions for places (so they can be reused instead of regenerated), a user record linked to your anonymous identifier, and aggregated country statistics.
- Purchase data — subscription status is managed by RevenueCat. We never see or store your payment details. RevenueCat may process a device identifier to manage your subscription.
- Diagnostics — anonymous crash and performance reports via Expo / EAS.
A2. Third-party services used by the app
- OpenStreetMap / Overpass API — points of interest data. Privacy Policy
- Wikipedia / Wikimedia — facts and images about places. Privacy Policy
- Google Gemini AI — generating quiz questions. Requests contain only the place name and its description — no personal data. Privacy Policy
- Google Firebase (Firestore, Anonymous Authentication) — storing quizzes, anonymous user records and statistics. Privacy Policy
- RevenueCat — subscription management. Privacy Policy
- ipwho.is — approximate location from IP address, used only when GPS is unavailable or declined. Website
- Expo / EAS — app updates and crash reports. Privacy Policy
A3. Your choices
You can revoke location permission at any time in your device settings. The app continues to work — it will then estimate your approximate area from your IP address, or you can choose a place manually on the map.
Uninstalling the app deletes all data stored on your device. Quiz questions already stored on our servers are not linked to you personally and may remain.
Part B — The Web Version
pinquiz.com
B1. Data we process
- IP address / approximate location — when you open pinquiz.com, we determine your approximate location (city level) from your IP address in order to show places near you. This is done through the service ipwho.is. We do not store your IP address on our servers.
- Places you choose — when you select a place, its name is sent to Wikipedia (for facts) and to our own server function (a Cloudflare Worker) which forwards it to Google Gemini to generate quiz questions. No personal data is included — only the name and description of the place.
- Local storage — nothing beyond what your browser needs to display the page.
B2. Third-party services used by the web version
- Cloudflare (Pages & Workers) — hosting and our server function for quiz generation. Privacy Policy
- ipwho.is — approximate location from IP address. Website
- MapTiler — map tiles. Privacy Policy
- OpenStreetMap / Overpass / Nominatim — points of interest, city and country lookup. Privacy Policy
- Wikipedia / Wikimedia — facts and images about places. Privacy Policy
- Google Gemini AI — generating quiz questions. Privacy Policy
These providers necessarily receive your IP address when your browser contacts them, as is technically unavoidable on the web.
Part C — Applies to Both
App & Web
C1. What we never do
- We do not sell or rent your data.
- We do not use your data for advertising.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites.
- We do not ask for your name or email (unless you contact us directly).
C2. Children's privacy
PinQuiz is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
C3. Legal basis (GDPR)
We process the data described above on the basis of our legitimate interest in providing a functioning app (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) and, where you grant location permission, on your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). You may withdraw consent at any time in your device settings.
C4. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you have rights of access, correction, deletion, restriction and objection regarding your personal data, as well as the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (in Austria: Datenschutzbehörde).
Because we collect very little personal data and store most information on your device, most requests can be fulfilled by clearing the app's data or uninstalling it. For anything else, please contact us.
C5. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as PinQuiz evolves. The current version is always available at this URL.
